Homewood is an affluent mid-sized commuter suburb of Birmingham. A little after 1873, residents of Birmingham began developing small communities outside the city which would become Homewood. One of these communities, Edgewood, saw the greatest amount of development as it contained a railway leading right into the heart of the city. In 1926, Rosedale, Edgewood and Grove park was incorporated under the name Homewood, with Hollywood and Oak Grove annexed in the years to come. In 1970, Homewood broke away from Jefferson County’s school system and created its own school system.
