Irondale is a suburb of Birmingham famously known as the town that inspired the book and movie Fried Green Tomatoes. The book/movie’s “Whistle-Stop Cafe” is loosely based on the Irondale Cafe. Irondale gets its named from a furnance located west of current city limits, Cahaba Iron Works, which was used to make pig iron which was used for a wide variety of iron-based tools.

Irondale Cafe – The Original Whistlestop Cafe calls itself a historically enduring eatery serving traditional southern fare in the heart of the original downtown Irondale. The cafe first opened in 1928, and despite changing ownership has kept the same menu since – currently serving 600-800 slices of fried green tomatoes daily.

Pine Tree County Club – Located just outside of city limits the Pine Tree Country Club is a family oriented club offering members of all ages a wide variety of recreational and social activities to enjoy. Aside from lessons on the “crown jewel” 18-hole golf course, members can also enjoy tennis, swimming in an Olympic sized pool, fine dining and more.

Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve – Considered one of the nation’s largest nature preserves, Ruffner Mountain has over 1000 historic mining ruins and about 14 miles of trails connecting Irondale to surrounding communities of Greater Birmingham.
